The Lightbulb 💡

After fighting with the pages of my ballot book my first time voting, I knew there had to be a better way to learn about ballot issues.

So, I decided to design an app to solve this frustrating problem.

I created a clear purpose and "why," before beginning to research users.

Problem Statement

User Research

I began my research knowing that I wanted to create an app geared towards 18-25 year olds who are busy with college and their careers.

I distributed a survey and here's what I found:

When asked “What could change about the voting process?” users responded with

One response especially drove my design process:

The Solution

After talking to my peers, I identified 3 problems:

The process of researching ballot issues is long and confusing.

Voting feels like a chore because it is boring and un-interactive.

Election environments are polarized.

1.

2.

3.

With these problems in mind, I began feature ideation.

After sifting through many ideas, I landed on 3 core features.

a survey approach to evaluating users' beliefs about an issue or candidate

1. Point Me

2. Deep Dive

3. Ballot Preview

information traditionally laid out in a way that is easily to comprehend

allows users to conveniently view their Point Me results

The Build

Throughout the process of sketching and digitizing the wireframes, I prioritized a low cognitive load so that users wouldn't feel overwhelmed.

Testing, Testing

After creating a mid-fi working prototype I asked 5 people to use my design.

Here's what I gathered:

Confusion with Interactivity

A simple fix was the answer: change the rectangle to a circle on the results screen.

After making a few edits, I tested my app with 5 users.

I was delighted to see that users were able to smoothly navigate the app and understood how each feature would help them!
